“Humor is one of the best ingredients of survival.” —Aung San Suu Kyi

I was playing my daily cryptogram puzzle when I stumbled across this quote. It caught me off guard because it was true. I hadn’t thought of humor that way before, until that day as I realized how often laughter has helped me get through the day.

One of them days

Just last week, I had one of those days at work with little energy and where everything was annoying and frustrating.

During my break, I scrolled through TikTok and landed on a woman telling a joke. about an invisible man and an invisible woman who got married.

She said, “I don’t know what they saw in each other.” Then she paused for about a minute.

Smiled hard and said, “They had kids…but they were nothing to look at either.”

Her laugh made me laugh, and I obtained some energy. That tiny moment helped me survive the rest of the day.

A small break in time

Laughter doesn’t erase the stress, although it would be nice. It doesn’t fix the workload or mend the tension. But it does soften the edges. It reminds us we’re still human, still capable of joy, even when the circumstances feel anything but joyful.

Humor is a sassy, rebellious way of saying, “You thought you could keep me down.” or something like that.

The point is, humor is a piece of joy in this messed up world. And sometimes, it’s the only thing that keeps us from sinking.
